Scientific laboratories generate large quantities of plastic waste from disposable products. But even in this highly sensitive area, where sterility and hygiene are essential, more sustainability is possible. The QIAGEN N.V. proves this with its environmentally friendly QIAwave extraction kits, which contain up to 63 percent less plastic. Reaction vessels made from post-consumer recyclates (PCR) contribute to this, among other things. These were developed as part of the PÖPPELMANN blue® initiative, with which we are committed to greater environmental and climate protection.
Documentation requirements for laboratory products are even more stringent than in other segments. The use of recycled materials is only possible in certain cases. Even in these cases, customers can rely on reliable processes, e.g. for material specifications and qualification plans. We have our own specifications for PCR materials, separate receiving inspections for these material batches and standard qualification plans for the requalification of existing equipment. This means that the services of the Pöppelmann laboratory have once again been given a special status.The extra effort involved in inspecting incoming goods provides customers with peace of mind and pays off in the end: Where virgin material has been replaced by recycled material at Pöppelmann, the products have reached the usual high quality level.
This makes a big difference to the bottom line, as Inga Irle from QIAGEN calculates: „A typical customer uses an average of five of our standard kits per year. The new resource-saving version saves 0.7 kg of cardboard and 4.6 kg of plastic.“
My Green Lab is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting sustainability in scientific research. In awarding the ACT label (Accountability, Consistency & Transparency), the organization took into account the reduction of production-related environmental impacts, the responsible handling of chemicals, product and packaging contents, and the disposal of packaging.
The new, more environmentally friendly QIAwave extraction kits from QIAGEN have been on the market since January 2022 - and impressively demonstrate how more sustainability is also possible in the strictly regulated laboratory sector, as Sebastian Hannöver from Pöppelmann FAMAC® emphasizes: „The reaction vessels from PCR reduce GHG emissions by 62 percent compared to virgin material."
