CLIMATE PROTECTION.
Now.

Our climate strategy reduces emissions so effectively that we are in line with the 1.5 degree target of the Paris Agreement - confirmed by the Science Based Targets initiative.

Our climate strategy
IN ACCORDANCE WITH the 1.5 °C target
from Paris.

Climate protection is not an option for us - it's an obligation. To stop global warming, we have developed ambitious targets based on scientific evidence. In December 2022, we defined our climate targets using the methodology of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Validation followed in October 2023: our targets are in line with the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Climate Agreement.

This makes us one of over 7,500 companies worldwide whose climate targets have been reviewed and confirmed by the SBTi in terms of their effectiveness. We regularly document our progress in the greenhouse gas report.

The overarching goal:
Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of our climate strategy, we have calculated our Corporate Carbon Footprint (CCF) for the reference year 2021 for the first time. It shows where our greenhouse gas emissions are generated - and where we can make targeted reductions. We have calculated and published our CO2 footprint every year since 2022. In 2023, Pöppelmann's direct and indirect emissions amounted to a total of 234,174 tons of CO2e.

Around 90% of this is attributable to Scope 3.

Our goals für
real climate protection

.

We are committed to reducing our emissions by 50% in Scope 1 and 2 and by 25% in Scope 3 by 2030 - in each case compared to the base year 2021. Further information on the Corporate Carbon Footprint:

Our climate targets according to SBTi - Scope 1 and 2

The information for Scope 1 and 2 relates to emissions caused directly by our processes on the factory premises and by energy requirements:

  • through the combustion of gasoline, diesel and gas and the release of refrigerants (Scope 1)

  • through the consumption of purchased energy (Scope 2)

A reduction of 50% in Scope 1 and 2 corresponds to 13,350 tons less CO2e - that is roughly the same as the annual emissions of 1,500 average households in Germany (on average, a household emits around 8.9 tons of CO2e per year).

Our climate targets in accordance with SBTi - Scope 3

Indirect Scope 3 emissions account for a total of 90% of the CCF.

These are primarily determined by the categories „goods and services“ (primarily including our purchased plastics) and „end-of-life“ (primarily including products that are incinerated).

How we can reduce our emissions together:

Less Scope 1 emissions through more e-mobility.

We are gradually transforming our vehicle fleet towards e-mobility and are currently already using 40% electric and hybrid vehicles. In parallel, we are expanding the charging infrastructure at our sites: e.g. 28 charging points at Plant 1 alone - for employees, visitors and company vehicles

Less Scope 2 emissions thanks to more LED lighting.

We are improving the quality of light with LED lighting and at the same time consuming 50% less energy. This corresponds to savings of 1,800 MWh/a from 2021 to 2023.

Less Scope 2 emissions through
more photovoltaics on hall roofs.

Wherever possible, we equip our roofs with photovoltaics - including the façades of new buildings. The solar power generated is used directly in the factory. We are currently planning to add 7,000 kWp by the end of 2025.

Less Scope 2 emissions through more wind power.

We have concluded long-term agreements for the supply of wind power from the region and are constantly exploring further opportunities. In Q2 2025, we will cover around 50 percent of our electricity requirements with wind power and photovoltaics

Awarded.
For consistent climate protection.

Pöppelmann was accepted into the circle of climate protection companies in 2023 - as one of currently only 72 companies in Germany. The decisive factor was our consistent focus on climate protection, energy efficiency and the circular economy - across all divisions and locations.

The Klimaschutz-Unternehmen e.V. association is a cross-industry network of German businesses. It was initiated by the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMUV), the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWK) and the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce (DIHK). Admission is based on a multi-stage selection process by an independent advisory board. Prerequisite: ambitious climate targets, transparent progress and demonstrably effective measures to save energy and reduce emissions.

Pöppelmann was accepted into the "Klimaschutz-Unternehmen e.V." association in 2023 for the consistent focus of its corporate strategy on climate protection and the circular economy. In March 2023, the then Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (left) presented the certificate; further from left, Pöppelmann shareholder and Advisory Board Chairwoman Catherin Vitale, shareholder Maximilian Forst, climate and circular economy expert Benjamin Kampmann and Managing Director Matthias Lesch.
