Pöppelmann FAMAC® packaging, made of plastic originating from post-consumer recycled material (PCR), was created as part of the company-wide PÖPPELMANN blue® initiative and closes the material cycle.

Plastic is ubiquitous and has become an indispensable part of everyday life. Every year, more than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced worldwide. 146 million tonnes of it are used in packaging – as optimum protection for sensitive foodstuffs, cleaning agents and detergents, hygiene products and fertilisers1.

Despite growing environmental awareness, only a small percentage of the used packaging is recycled. However, it is expected that the rate of recycled packaging waste shall increase to 63 percent by 20222. 

Therefore it is not a surprise that the topics of environmentally friendly packaging, sustainability and resource conservation are increasingly affecting the packaging industry. Set guidelines and recycling targets require new approaches, holistic concepts and environmentally friendly processes.

Recycled materials – a real alternative.

“Since we have opted for a conscious development of our products right from the start, we have been relying on the use of recycled materials for a long time”, explains Marco von Döllen, Sales Manager at FAMAC® Packaging. These are recycled plastics originating from so-called post-consumer waste, i.e. waste, which is produced by private or commercial end consumers and disposed of in the recyclables bin. They allow us to satisfy the constantly growing needs and product demands of customers and consumers while at the same time conserve resources.

By now, recycled plastics are suitable for a wide range of manufacturing processes. They also have many other advantages: Their production requires significantly less energy than the production of new plastics, they have lower CO2 emission values as well as pollutant emissions and, most importantly, they close the material cycle.

“We have taken advantage of this. This closed material cycle is precisely what we strive to create with our PÖPPELMANN blue® initiative”, explains Marco von Döllen. He refers to PCR packaging, which consists of 100 percent post-consumer recycled materials obtained from packaging waste from dual systems. After being used and disposed of in the recyclables bin, it is converted into recycled plastic pellets and these pellets are then used to produce new products of the same quality.

“This is possible because our Recycling Blue containers are designed in such a way that their material can be safely identified and then recycled in dual-system recycling plants after disposal”, explains Jörg Wilke, Development Manager at FAMAC® Packaging. This plastic can be used again for the production of new packaging, thus closing the material cycle.

Its practical effectiveness is proven by the Gold German Packaging Award, which our resource-saving universal packaging received from the German Packaging Institute (dvi).

A look into the future.

The plastics industry is undergoing change. Despite strong demand from various industries, such as packaging, electronics, transport and traffic, as well as the construction sector, one thing is certain: initial successes are not enough and the plastics world must come up with better ideas. And there is a good reason for it: There is a high demand for high-quality recycled plastic. However, the current supply of these recycled plastics is still lower than the demand.

“We are proud to be among the pioneers in the industry whose products already close the material cycle”, says Jörg Wilke. However, it is now important not to rest on this success, but to move on. “We are convinced that in the future we will be able to offer an even wider range of PCR solutions that not only convince us, but above all our customers.” Our PCR packaging can be already individually adapted to customer requirements in different formats such as mugs, containers or buckets, so that the application possibilities are manifold.
